Nutzlose Tage sinnvoll nutzen

Ich nutze einen bisher verkorksten Tag,  um etwas (hoffentliches) Sinnvolles über Led Zeppelins Song Boogie With Stu zu schreiben. Einer meiner Led Zeppelin-Lieblingstitel!

Boogie with Stu wurde 1971 auf dem Album Physical Graffiti veröffentlicht. Dem Hörensagen nach, war er ein Lückenfüller. Ein Lückenfüller mit einer spannenden Geschichte!

Wer ist Stu?

Ian „Stu“ Stewart wurde am 18. Juli 1938 in Pittenweem, Schottland geboren. Er verstarb am 12. Dezember 1985 in London. Er war Pianist und vor allem für seine Liebe zum Boogie Woogie bekannt. Er meldete sich als erster auf eine Anzeige von Brian Jones in den Jazz News vom 2. Mai 1962.  Brian suchte Musiker für die Gründung einer Rhythm & Blues Band. Mick Jagger und Keith Richards stießen im Juni dazu. Die Rollin‘ Stones, mit Dick Taylor (Bass) und Mick Avory (Drums) hatten am 12. Juli 1962 ihren ersten Auftritt im Londoner Marquee Club. Ian „Stu“ Stewart gehörte zu den Gründungsmitglidern der Rolling Stones.

1963 veranlaßte der damalige Stones-Manager, Andrew Loog Oldham, dass Stewart aus der Band flog. Stu passe wegen seines Aussehens (kantiges Kinn) nicht zum Image der Band. Stewart blieb bis zu seinem Tod im Umfeld der Band. Er arbeite als Roadie und spielte weiterhin sowohl im Studio als auch bei Live-Auftritten das Piano für die Rolling Stones.

Headley Grange, Boogie With Stu

Led Zeppelin komponierte und produzierte die Alben Led Zeppelin III, Led Zeppelin IV, Houses of the Holy und Physical Graffiti in der Headley Grange.
Bei der Produktion des Physical Graffiti Albums lieh sich Led Zeppelin das mobile Aufnahmestudio der Rolling Stones aus.

Im Hauptraum der Headley Grange stand ein altes, verstimmtes Klavier. Als Stu „mal vorbei kam“, wurde geplaudert und gejammt. Stu setzte er sich an das verstimmte Klavier, Jimmy Page (ver-)stimmt seine Gitarre auf das Klavie, übgergab sie an Robert Plant und schnappte sich eine Mandoline. Das Tape lief. Der improvisierte Jam begann! Robert Plant sang dazu den Text von „Ooh My Head“ des verstorbenen Richie Valens . Um dessen Mutter die Tantiemen zu sichern, wurde wurde Mrs. Valens  auf dem Album Phyical Graffiti als Komponistin verewigt: Page/Plant/Jones/Bonham/Ian Stewart/Mrs. Valens. (Viktor)

Making sense of useless days

I’m taking advantage of what has been a useless day so far to write something (hopefully) useful about Led Zeppelin’s song Boogie With Stu. One of my favorite Led Zeppelin songs!
Boogie With Stu was released in 1971 on the album Physical Graffiti. According to hearsay it was a stopgap. A stopgap with a fascinating story!

Who is Stu?

Ian „Stu“ Stewart was born in Pittenweem, Scotland on July 18, 1938. He died on December 12, 1985 in London. He was a pianist and best known for his love of boogie woogie. He was the first to respond to Brian Jones‘ advertisement in Jazz News on May 2, 1962, in which Brian was looking for musicians to form a rhythm and blues band. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards joined in June. The Rollin‘ Stones, with Dick Taylor on bass and Mick Avory on drums, made their first appearance at the Marquee Club in London on July 12, 1962. Ian „Stu“ Stewart was one of the founding members of the Rolling Stones.

In 1963, the Stones‘ manager at the time, Andrew Loog Oldham, had Stewart kicked out of the band. Stu did not fit into the band’s image because of his appearance (square chin). Stewart stayed with the band until his death. He worked as a roadie and continued to play piano for the Rolling Stones both in the studio and live.

Led Zeppelin composed and produced the albums Led Zeppelin III, Led Zeppelin IV, Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffiti at Headley Grange. During the production of Physical Graffiti, Led Zeppelin borrowed the Rolling Stones‘ mobile recording studio.

There was an old, out-of-tune piano in the main room at Headley Grange. When Stu „dropped in“, they chatted and jammed. Stu sat down at the out-of-tune piano, Jimmy Page (mis)tuned his guitar on the piano, handed it to Robert Plant and grabbed a mandolin. The tape played. The improvised jam began! Robert Plant sang the lyrics to „Ooh My Head“ by the late Richie Valens. To secure royalties for his mother, Mrs. Valens was immortalized as a composer on the album Physical Graffiti: Page/Plant/Jones/Bonham/Ian Stewart/Mrs. Valens. (Viktor.)
