Vorweg: Ich mag Joe Henrys Musik! Der 1960 in den USA geborene Joseph Lee Henry (Joe Henry) ist Singer-Songwriter, Gitarrist und Produzent. Seine ruhige und lässige Musik ist nach eingenen Worten eine Mischung aus Folk, Blues, Jazz, Rock und Country. Mit den Alben Genuine Negro Jig, A Stranger Here und Don’t Give Up On Me gewann er jeweils einen Grammy.

Ein Fakt, der eher eine Schlagzeile ist: Seine Frau überredete ihn, ihr zu erlauben Madonna (ja, MADONNA!) eine Demo seines Songs Stop zuschicken zu dürfen. Stop wurde überarbeitet und erschien im Jahr 2000 als Don’t Tell Me auf Madonnas Album Music! Vielleicht half es, dass Joes Ehefrau, Melanie Ciccone, die Schwester Madonnas ist. 

John Henrys Album Civilians wurde am 13. August 2007 durch das Plattenlabel Anti- veröffentlicht. Über das Albums sagt Henry, dass der Schwerpunkt der Aufnahme von Civilians auf dem Gefühl lag, mit einer Band in einem zu Raum spielen. „This approach is evident from the more stripped-back and raw feel of the album compared to the polish and sophistication heard on his previous three albums“ (*1)

Gegenüber dem Impose Magazine äußerte sich Joe Henry über das Album: Civilians is less upbeat and more influenced toward jazz and folk, which have melancholy undertones (*2).

Das Album wird 17 Jahre und 10 Tage später, am 23.08.2024, durch eraMusic als CD und erstmalig als Vinyl wieder aufgelegt. Das Album ist der perfekte musikalische Begleiter für den heutigen Sommertag! Entspanntes Musikhören mit Joe Henry am Ohr und ein Glas Eistee in der Hand! (Viktor)

First of all: I like Joe Henry’s music! Born in the USA in 1960, Joseph Lee Henry (Joe Henry) is a singer-songwriter, guitarist and producer. His quiet and relaxed music is, in his own words, a mixture of folk, blues, jazz, rock and country. His albums Genuine Negro Jig, A Stranger Here and Don’t Give Up On Me have each won him a Grammy.

A more headline-grabbing fact: his wife persuaded him to send Madonna (yes, MADONNA!) a demo of his song Stop. Stop was reworked and appeared as Don’t Tell Me on Madonna’s 2000 album Music! Perhaps it helped that Joe’s wife, Melanie Ciccone, is Madonna’s sister.

John Henry’s album Civilians was released on 13 August 2007 on the Anti- label. About the album, Henry says that the focus of recording Civilians was to capture the feeling of playing with a band in a room. „This approach is evident in the more stripped back and raw feel of the album compared to the polish and sophistication heard on his previous three albums“ (*1).

Joe Henry told Impose Magazine about the album: Civilians is less upbeat and more influenced by jazz and folk with melancholic undertones (*2).

Joe Henry gehört zu den Künstlern, die den Sound der modernen amerikanischen Folk- und Blueslandschaft nachhaltig geprägt haben. Henry ist nicht nur ein mit dem GRAMMY-Award ausgezeichneter Produzent, sondern auch ein angesehener Künstler in eigener Sache. Im Jahr 2024 wird Joe Henry drei seiner erfolgreichsten Studioalben über earMUSIC zum ersten Mal auf Vinyl veröffentlichen, mit einer besonderen Auswahl an bisher unveröffentlichten Bonustracks sowie intimen Demos und Liveaufnahmen aus
seinem persönlichen Archiv.

„Für mich ist es spannend, dieses Trio an Alben mit der Reissue-Serie wieder aufleben zu lassen, da diese Alben zusammen eine Art ‚Erwachsenwerden‘ für mich als Künstler darstellen, da ich aufgehört habe, die Grenze zwischen der Komposition eines Songs und seiner Artikulation im Studio zu betrachten. Alles wurde zu einem einzigen Impuls für mich… der direkt in meinem Keller in die Tat umgesetzt wurde“, beschreibt Henry die Reissue-Serie.

„Civilians“, das erste der drei Alben, lädt den Hörer auf eine Reise in Henrys poetische Lyrik ein. Beim Schreiben des Albums kehrte Henry zu einem traditionellen Ansatz des Songwritings zurück, indem er die meisten Songs mit der Akustikgitarre begann zu komponieren und erst später im Laufe des Prozesses die Songs ausproduzierte. Aufgenommen in Henrys Studio in Pasadena, haben neben Henry auch langjährige Weggefährten wie Loudon Wainwright III, Bill Frisell, Greg Leisz und Van Dyke Parks den Sound des Albums beeinflusst. Civilians hier vorbestellen

Auf „Blood From Stars“, Henrys Album aus dem Jahr 2009, begibt er sich in die Sphären von orchestralem Blues und Jazz. Zu dieser Zeit hörte Henry viel Country-Blues und beschäftigte sich mit Gedichten von Schriftstellern wie E.E. Cummings – zwei Kunstformen, die, laut Henry selbst, den Sound des Albums stark beeinflussten. Mit seinen bewegenden Texten und seiner gefühlvollen Stimme schafft Henry eine ergreifende Erzählung auf einem Album, das er als eines seiner persönlichen Favoriten unter seinen eigenen Werken bezeichnet. „Blood From Stars“ hier vorbestellen

Den Abschluss der Trilogie bildet „Invisible Hour“, eines von Henrys neueren Werken. Es wurde 2013 aufgenommen und versammelt mehrere seiner engsten musikalischen Weggefährten, darunter Lisa Hannigan und den Bestsellerautor Colum McCann. Henry beschreibt die Songs auf dem Album als „Lieder, die sich in gewisser Weise mit dem Thema der Ehe beschäftigen – Ehe als Verb, nicht als Substantiv.“ Das Album erzählt eine fesselnde Geschichte über Resilienz und die erlösende Kraft der Liebe.
